Having a connection with a lactation consultant is so important to the success of breastfeeding. Moms who meet with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant breastfeed for a longer period of time than moms who do not. By the end of this post, you’ll know the reasons why you should talk pick a lactation consultant before you deliver.

1) Find out your insurance benefits for breastfeeding

Most insurance plans cover breastfeeding help appointments with a lactation consultant at little or no out-of-pocket cost to you. When you talk to a lactation consultant before you deliver, she can check your insurance plan to see how many lactation consults are covered for you. This gives you peace of mind knowing that your insurance covers the help you may need with breastfeeding.

2) Learn about breastfeeding ahead of time

The saying ‘knowledge is power’ couldn’t be more true when it comes to breastfeeding your baby. Having a good understanding of how your body makes and maintains a milk supply and how your infant will act in the first few days after delivery can help make breastfeeding easier for you. 3) Get your breastfeeding and pumping questions answered

You probably have so many concerns or questions about breastfeeding or maybe you haven’t given breastfeeding much thought and don’t know where to even start. By meeting with me for an individual prenatal breastfeeding education session, you can get all of your questions answered in a way that is specific to you and your breastfeeding goals.

3) Know who to call for help

When it’s 3am and you’re sitting at home having breastfeeding trouble, it is such a relief to know who to call to get quick help.  If you already have a relationship with a lactation consultant, it’s easy to get your questions answered. It’s a huge boost of confidence to know you have a personal breastfeeding support team ready to help you get back on track to meet your breastfeeding goals.
